Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at info@coastalclarity.co.uk if you cannot find an answer to your question.

The latest guidance released by ENT UK specifies that clinicians performing microsuction should be registered with a regulatory body, such as the HCPC (Health and Care Professions Council). At Coastal Clarity, we want to reassure our clients that all our clinicians are fully registered with the HCPC and have received comprehensive training in ear wax removal, in line with the standards set by the British Society of Audiology.

You can access the full guidance here:

ENT UK Clinical Guidance on Microsuction of the External Ear Canal.

This document also provides further details on ear wax removal practices.

  • If you have tinnitus related to earwax, removing the wax can reduce or eliminate the symptoms.
  • If earwax is causing your hearing loss, removing it can potentially improve your hearing.
  • Removing  earwax can also help to alleviate any discomfort or irritation in your ears.
  • Removing  earwax can also allow for a more detailed examination of your ear canal using an otoscope.

  • To prepare for your appointment, we recommend using earwax softeners, such as an olive oil spray. This can help to soften the earwax and help remove it.
  • If you think that your eardrum may be perforated or you have a mastoid cavity do not use ear drops. Instead, talk to your GP about ear wax removal, and they will determine whether you need to consult a specialist.

  • To use the drops in your ears, you will need to warm them up to body temperature first.
  • Lie on your side with the ear that needs treatment facing towards the ceiling and add a few drops into your ear.
  • It's a good idea to remain on your side for about 5 minutes to allow the drops to soak in. Don't worry if you experience temporarily reduced hearing or hear popping or other sounds; this is a sign that the drops are working.
  • If you need to treat both ears, wait for 30 minutes before administering drops into the other ear.

  • Your audiologist will clarify the entire earwax removal procedure and identify any potential risks to ensure the safest and most efficient method for removing the earwax. If the earwax is still too hard, the appointment may be paused, and the audiologist may suggest continuing with the earwax softener drops.
  • The next step would be a thorough ear examination, including a video otoscopic image of your eardrum, which would allow you to see the wax blockage.
  • Once the examination is completed, your audiologist will guide you to sit in a comfortable and safe position during the earwax removal process.
  • After the removal process, your audiologist will conduct another ear examination and video otoscopy to ensure the wax has been cleared. You will also be briefed on the tympanic membrane (eardrum) status.
